As the first Grand Prix event of the year, the tournament attracted a strong field and produced a full day of competitive matches. Across the squad there were several high-quality contests, with athletes demonstrating both technical judo and solid tactical decision-making.
Leading the results were Lloyd and Joe, who both fought their way through challenging divisions to claim silver medals.
Adding to the club’s medal tally were Hannah, Aoife and Imogen, who each secured bronze medals after strong performances on the day.
The results gave Ultimate Judo a total of five medals from eight competitors, representing a strong return at the opening Grand Prix of the year.
Beyond the podium finishes, there were also strong performances from Karl, Calvin and Fin, who all competed well throughout the day.
While narrowly missing out on medals, their performances contributed valuable experience and points towards their black belt progression, an important part of development at this level of competition.
The overall level of judo across the team was positive, with athletes showing good composure, tactical awareness and commitment in their contests.
The club took a smaller squad than usual to the event. With only one coach available on the day and several Ultimate Judo athletes preparing to travel to Japan for training next week, the decision was made to send a focused group of competitors.
Despite the reduced numbers, the squad delivered a series of strong performances and represented the club well across the day.
Coach Stuart spent much of the event moving between contest areas supporting athletes throughout the competition, keeping energy levels up with the traditional combination of coffee and wine gums while managing multiple matches at once.
One of the highlights of the day came from Hannah, who demonstrated full commitment to groundwork during one contest, enthusiastically meeting the mat face-first and leaving Ravenscraig with both a bronze medal and a memorable competition bruise.
Moments like these are all part of the competition experience and reflect the determination shown by the team throughout the day.
With five medals, strong performances and valuable development experience, the Hibari Kan Grand Prix proved to be a very positive start to the 2026 season for Ultimate Judo.
The club will now look ahead to the next competitions in the Grand Prix series as the year continues.
