Starting martial arts as an adult isn’t just about fitness or learning throws — it’s also about gaining practical life skills that carry over into everyday life. That’s exactly what’s been happening in our Adult Beginners Judo course in Aberdeen, where 12 adults have recently begun their judo journey together.
From the first session, the focus has been on building confidence, supporting one another, and learning in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Everyone comes with different goals, but they’re all progressing together and enjoying the process.
One of the most important skills taught in judo is how to fall safely (ukemi). For adults, this is especially valuable. Knowing how to land correctly can reduce the risk of injury from everyday slips and falls — something that becomes even more relevant during the icy winter months we experience here in Aberdeen.
Rather than stiffening up or panicking, students learn how to relax, protect the head, and disperse impact safely. It’s a simple skill, but one that can genuinely make a difference outside the dojo.
Alongside learning how to fall, students are developing core judo skills such as balance, movement, posture, and gripping. These foundations help improve coordination, strength, and mobility while keeping training safe and accessible for beginners.
Judo is particularly well suited to adults because it rewards technique and timing over brute strength, making it ideal for anyone new to martial arts.
A big part of what makes the course special is the group itself. Training partners encourage each other, celebrate progress, and share a few laughs along the way. Everyone recently received their judo suits — a milestone that really helped cement the sense of team and shared journey.
If you’re searching for adult beginners martial arts in Aberdeen, judo offers fitness, confidence, self-defence awareness, and real-world skills you can use for life. No prior experience is needed — just a willingness to learn.
