This milestone is the result of years of dedication, resilience, and hard work — both on and off the mat.
Josh competed in his first National Grading Examination at Ravenscraig last month, where he delivered an outstanding performance. He earned all of his required points through line-up, secured two strong wins, and then stepped up to fight three opponents consecutively to meet the demanding fighting criteria.
The composure and determination Josh showed on the day reflected not only his physical ability, but also his maturity and mindset as a judoka.
Following the grading, Josh worked tirelessly to refine his technical knowledge and theory. His efforts were rewarded when he successfully completed his examination under Senior Examiner Jason Moore in Aberdeen, confirming his readiness for black belt level.
This stage of the journey highlighted Josh’s discipline and understanding that judo excellence extends far beyond competition alone.
Josh has been part of the club since 2014, growing up on the mat and developing through years of consistent training. Watching his progression — from a young beginner to tying on his black belt — has been an incredibly proud moment.
As a coach, it is a privilege to place a black belt around a student’s waist, and even more so when it represents such a long-term commitment to judo values, respect, and perseverance.
Achieving 1st Dan at such a young age is a remarkable accomplishment, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in Josh’s judo journey.
Josh’s achievement is an inspiration to every junior and senior member of the club, showing what is possible through consistency, hard work, and belief.
From everyone at Ultimate Judo — congratulations, Josh, and welcome to the black belt club.
