This award is named in memory of Sam Lynch, who tragically passed away on August 31, 2024. Sam was not only an outstanding judoka but also a larger-than-life character whose kindness, leadership, and support for others left an indelible mark on our community.
The Sam Lynch Award has been established to keep Sam’s legacy alive within our dojo and beyond. Each year, it will be presented to a member who demonstrates the true values of judo: respect, courage, honour, commitment, and friendship. Winners are those who push themselves to grow, support their peers, and show leadership — qualities Sam embodied every day.
The main trophy will remain proudly displayed in our dojo, engraved with the names of future winners. More than a symbol of achievement, it will spark conversations about Sam, about mental health, and about the importance of breaking the stigma around discussing feelings — especially among young people. Each recipient will also receive a personal keepsake to carry forward the impact of this award.
Our first recipient is Callum Innes, who has been with the club since the age of six. Callum’s commitment, humility, and leadership both on and off the mat make him a natural and worthy choice for this inaugural award.
The Sam Lynch Award is now part of our club’s culture — a lasting reminder of Sam’s life, the importance of looking after one another, and the strength found in community.
Congratulations to Callum, and thank you to Sam — your legacy continues to inspire.
