Rodger and Gordon’s story is a powerful reminder of what makes judo so much more than just a martial art. It's a lifelong journey built on discipline, respect, friendship, and loyalty.
Gordon first began judo at just 7 years old at a club in Edinburgh, where Rodger Bornowski took him under his wing. From day one, Rodger’s unique coaching style—equal parts technical expertise and a touch of madness—sparked something in Gordon that would shape the rest of his life.
Even after all these years, the bond between them has never faded. Gordon and Rodger still speak on the phone almost daily, sharing stories, advice, and keeping the spirit of judo alive in their friendship.
Rodger visited Aberdeen this weekend to share his passion and knowledge with the senior members of Ultimate Judo, and he did not disappoint. With his trademark energy, charm, and deep love for the sport, he brought the mats to life—reminding everyone in the room why we fall in love with judo in the first place.
The session wasn’t just physical—it was educational and inspiring. Rodger talked the team through two historic videosof him performing kata—one at the Edinburgh club and another on the prestigious stage of the Royal Albert Hall, where he partnered with none other than George Kerr, one of the legends of British Judo. Watching these moments, our team gained a deeper appreciation for the technical precision and discipline behind kata.
As Rodger said to the group:
“Judo is all about consistency. That’s how we improve, and that’s how we stay connected through the years.”
His words resonated deeply, especially with those who have been on the mats for many years.
After the session, Rodger and Gordon shared a well-earned meal and spent the evening catching up—reflecting on over 15 years of life, laughter, and judo in Aberdeen.
At Ultimate Judo, we don’t just teach techniques—we build connections. This weekend wasn’t just about coaching; it was about honouring the values that make judo in Scotland so special. Friendship, loyalty, fun, and passion—Rodger and Gordon live those values every day, and their reunion reminded us why we train, why we teach, and why we stick together.
Whether you’re a beginner, a black belt, or someone who just loves the spirit of judo, Ultimate Judo welcomes you. We’re more than a club—we’re a community built on tradition, respect, and lifelong friendships.
