This initiative is a key part of our long-term succession planning, aiming to prepare young judoka to eventually achieve their National Coaching Award, while gaining hands-on coaching experience within a structured, supportive environment.
The Coach Academy isn’t just a training course — it’s an immersive experience in learning how to teach, support, and lead within the club. Participants will explore:
What to coach – including judo fundamentals, session planning, and development milestones
How to coach – focusing on communication, leadership, and motivation
Why we coach – understanding the deeper value and impact of coaching in judo
Eligibility: Members aged 14–16
Places Available: 6
Mentorship: Gordon and Stuart (3 mentees each)
Commitment Required: Minimum one class per week, plus monthly group sessions
Programme Cost: Free of charge – an investment in our future
Expectations: Excellent attendance, timekeeping, and a consistently positive attitude
This is a long-term programme, and participants must be fully committed. Over time, mentees will be encouraged to lead parts of sessions and build their skills in a real coaching environment. The programme also includes regular feedback, progress tracking, and testing.
Participants who do not meet the standards of conduct or attendance may be removed from the programme.
We are now accepting expressions of interest. If your child is keen to be part of this unique opportunity, please get in touch.
Application forms will be distributed by: May 5th
Deadline to apply: May 12th
Application Process: Short form followed by a brief interview
Due to the limited number of places, not all applicants will be selected in this round. Those who are not successful will be encouraged to apply again during the next intake.
As part of the Coach Academy, participants will begin assisting in younger classes to gain real-world experience. This is a direct part of our long-term progression plan, and an exciting step toward building a strong future for Ultimate Judo.
We’re thrilled to launch this initiative and support the growth of our members both on and off the mat. This is our commitment to developing not just great judoka, but great people.
