For those unfamiliar, newaza refers to the ground-based techniques used in judo and other grappling martial arts. These techniques focus on control, transitions, and submissions while on the mat. Think pins, chokes, arm locks, and escapes – all the essentials for mastering the art of groundwork.
In judo, newaza complements the standing techniques (tachi-waza), allowing practitioners to develop a complete skill set. Whether you’re interested in competition, self-defense, or simply improving your fitness, newaza training offers numerous benefits, including:
Improved body control and balance
Enhanced problem-solving under pressure
Increased physical strength and endurance
Better understanding of leverage and technique
