Ian brought his decades of experience and deep understanding of Judo to focus on some essential areas for development. The session emphasized the finer points of kuzushi—the art of unbalancing an opponent—and the importance of correct drilling techniques to build precision and confidence. His attention to detail and clear explanations left the squad not just better informed but deeply motivated to refine their skills.
The Tombo Squad members, being of an age where they can truly understand and relate to these concepts, found the session particularly impactful. With the maturity to appreciate the significance of technical excellence, they were able to grasp not only the how but the why behind the methods Ian shared. This level of understanding adds depth to their practice and encourages them to continue striving for mastery in every movement.
This session was particularly special, as it marked Ian’s return to the mats following a recent heart operation. Having been unwell for some time, his presence was a testament to the strength, perseverance, and passion that embody the spirit of Judo. Seeing him back in action, sharing his wisdom and love for the sport, was both uplifting and humbling for everyone in attendance.
Last night’s class wasn’t just about mastering techniques—it was a reminder of the resilience and dedication that define the Judo community. Ian’s journey back to the mats serves as a powerful example of overcoming challenges and staying true to one’s passion.
The Tombo Squad is incredibly grateful to Ian Guthrie for his time, expertise, and inspiration. His visit will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on all who were lucky enough to learn from him.
We look forward to continuing to build on the lessons learned and hope to welcome Ian back to the dojo soon.
Thank you, Ian, for a truly unforgettable night!
