In 2014, we had the honour of hosting Judo legend Georgii Zantaraia at Ultimate Judo. Born in Georgia, his family relocated to Ukraine during conflict, and under the Ukrainian flag Georgii soared — winning European and World titles and competing at the Olympics.
During his visit to Scotland, he ran a masterclass: sparring (randori) with over 50 children, breaking down techniques, and coaching senior members. His approachable attitude, humble demeanour and deep passion for judo left a lasting mark on everyone at the club.
With conflict unfolding in Ukraine, Georgii had an opportunity to leave — but chose to stay. As he recently said:
“I already left Abkhazia once and now I will not go anywhere and I will not give up anything.”
That decision, rooted in courage and defiance, turns him from a sporting icon into a hero. He’s not just a friend to Ultimate Judo — he stands for resilience, solidarity and hope.
At Ultimate Judo, we believe in more than throws and holds. Judo teaches resilience, respect and inner strength. Georgii’s decision to stand with his homeland now embodies those values more than ever.
We wish him, his family and all people affected strength and safety through these difficult times. And we hope that one day soon, judo will bring us all back together — on the mats, in peace and solidarity.
Please share this message. Let’s show support for Georgii, for Ukraine, and for the global judo community. Together, we’re not just a club — we’re a family.
