Remembering Bill Berry MBE: A True Gentleman of Judo

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform our judo family of the death of Bill Berry MBE, 7th Dan. Bill passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on Monday 15th February aged 85.

Bill played a pivotal role in helping Ultimate Judo get off the ground in Aberdeen back in 2010. He didn’t just open doors — he often walked through them right beside me in those early days. More than a mentor or supporter of the club, Bill was a close friend and trusted confidante. I’ll always be grateful for the chance to serve under his leadership on the Aberdeen Sports Council in recent years.

Bill had a way of offering advice — and the occasional scolding — always delivered with his signature dry wit. Whether we were grabbing a coffee or sitting down for a meal, it was clear Bill was one of Aberdeen’s most recognisable and respected figures. Everyone seemed to know him.

As a judoka, Bill’s credentials were unmatched. A 7th Dan black belt with over 65 years of dedication to judo, he was a British and Scottish Police Champion multiple times — a record only recently surpassed by one of his own players, Jason Moore. His contribution to the sport went far beyond the tatami: he served as Chairman and Honorary Vice-President of JudoScotland, was the longest-serving representative on the BJA Council, a Senior Examiner, and a National 'A' Referee.

Bill’s impact was also felt in the wider community. He proudly took part in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Baton Relay, was honoured as a Free Burgess of the City of Aberdeen, and was among the first inductees into the Aberdeen Sporting Hall of Fame, which can be seen at Aberdeen Sports Village. In 2016, his incredible contributions were further recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Clubsport Aberdeen.

Known affectionately as the gentleman of judo, Bill will be sorely missed — not just at competitions around the country, but also matside at clubs throughout the North East. He made it a point to drop in on sessions from time to time, always showing his support not only for Ultimate Judo, but for every club in the region.

On behalf of myself and everyone at Ultimate Judo, I send our deepest condolences to Bill’s family during this difficult time.

Rest well, Bill. You leave behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
