That moment lit a fire in Rusty. From then on, she dedicated her life to fighting for gender equality in sports—especially in women’s judo. Her mission was clear: no other woman should ever be denied recognition for her talent or passion again.
Rusty Kanokogi became a fierce advocate for women in sport. She was the driving force behind the first Women's World Judo Championships, held in Madison Square Garden in 1980—a groundbreaking event that paved the way for the inclusion of women's judo in the Olympic Games in 1988. Her legacy lives on in every woman who steps onto the tatami today.
In her own unforgettable words, Rusty vowed to “be the hammer, not the nail.” And that’s exactly what she did.
Now, thanks to Dr. Jean Kanokogi, Rusty's incredible story has been preserved in a powerful memoir. Jean, a former special agent and accomplished judoka herself, channels the same relentless spirit that defined her mother. Her book, Get Up & Fight, is available at www.rustykanokogi.com and is a must-read for anyone passionate about judo, women’s rights, or the fight for justice.
It’s not just a book—it’s a piece of history. A tribute to the woman who reshaped the future of women’s judo, earned her rightful place in the judo hall of fame, and showed the world how to use judo not just as a martial art, but as a force for change.
