20 May 2014
On the weekend of 17–18 May 2014, judoka and coaches from across the country travelled to Aberdeen for a standout event — Ultimate Judo’s Masterclass featuring World and European Champion Georgii Zantaraia.
Following the huge success of the previous year’s session with Olympic Champion Mark Huizinga, expectations were high. And this year delivered even more, thanks to the support of local sponsors including Specialist Valve Services, Simpson Forsyth Chartered Accountants, and OEM Diesel Products.
Over 60 adult judoka and coaches took to the mat on Saturday, followed by more than 60 young judoka on Sunday. The verdict from parents, kids, and coaches? Outstanding. Zantaraia's dynamic style, technical precision, and engaging teaching brought a new level of energy and inspiration to the North East judo community.
The event was led by Ultimate Judo Head Coach Gordon McCathie, alongside Stuart Sim from Stonehaven Judo Club — a great example of growing collaboration between clubs in the region.
Participants got hands-on experience with world-class techniques including uchi-mata, ura-nage, and some slick newaza transitions and tricks. Georgii was full of praise for the warm welcome in Aberdeen and even hinted at a return visit in the future.
The Ultimate Judo Masterclass continues to set the bar higher each year — and now, all eyes are on 2015 to raise it again.
Stay tuned.
