The session was an exciting blend of judo fundamentals and rugby-specific training, designed to complement the team's undefeated performance this season. Here's how it unfolded:
Building Strength, Stability, and Safety
The session began with warm-ups and gymnastic movements, focusing on improving agility and learning techniques to reduce injury risk during falls—a common scenario in both rugby and judo. These exercises not only built physical resilience but also instilled confidence in handling high-impact situations.
We then introduced core strength and stability games, tailored to challenge the players’ balance and body control. These drills emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong core—a critical component for both rugby scrums and judo throws.
Mastering Angles, Drive, and Leverage
One of the highlights of the session was teaching the boys about angles of attack and how to use drive effectively. By exploring the principles of leverage—a cornerstone of judo—we demonstrated how small adjustments in positioning and technique could neutralize larger opponents. This concept resonates strongly on the rugby pitch, where quick thinking and strategic play often make the difference.
A Winning Attitude
Throughout the session, the U15 team displayed the grit and determination that has propelled them to an undefeated season so far. Their energy and willingness to learn were truly inspiring, showcasing why they’re such a formidable force on the field.
Looking Ahead
It was a privilege to work with the Aberdeen Grammar U15 team, and we’re excited about future collaborations. By blending judo principles with rugby training, we’re not just building stronger athletes—we’re fostering a deeper understanding of movement, strategy, and resilience.
Here’s to the team’s continued success, both on the rugby pitch and in the dojo!
