Michihiro Omigawa's Visit: A Memorable Week of Judo and Friendship in Scotland

Ultimate Judo recently had the incredible privilege of welcoming Michihiro Omigawa to Scotland for a week of training, sightseeing, and deepening the bond between our club and one of Japan’s judo icons.

What began as an online friendship during the COVID-19 pandemic has blossomed into a rich, international relationship built on a shared passion for judo.

During the height of the pandemic, Gordon McCathie and Michihiro Omigawa connected while trying to keep the spirit of judo alive through online training sessions. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, they found a way to bridge the gap between Japan and Scotland, hosting joint virtual sessions with members of both dojos. This unique experience was a testament to the resilience of the judo community during difficult times.

In 2023, Ultimate Judo made the journey to Japan to train in Michihiro’s dojo – a place we had only seen through Zoom. The in-person experience was unforgettable, bringing to life everything we had shared virtually. This visit laid the foundation for even stronger ties between our clubs and created lasting memories for everyone involved. In 2024, Gordon and his family made a personal trip to visit Michihiro in Yokohama, further cementing the friendship.

Fast forward to 2024, and it was now our turn to welcome Michihiro Omigawa to Scotland. The week was packed with judo training sessions that brought together Scottish and Japanese techniques, blending our shared knowledge and skills. Beyond the dojo, the week also featured sightseeing around the stunning landscapes of Scotland, giving Michihiro a chance to experience our culture and hospitality.

One of the highlights of the trip was a seminar at the International School of Aberdeen, where Michihiro’s wealth of experience and expertise was on full display. It was a fantastic opportunity for students and judoka alike to learn from one of the best, and the day was filled with valuable insights and demonstrations. The seminar was an unforgettable day, but the entire week left a lasting impression on all who participated.

This visit was more than just about judo – it was about friendship, culture, and the shared love of the martial art that brought us together in the first place. Michihiro’s time with us reminded us of the power of judo to connect people, regardless of distance or circumstance.

We are incredibly grateful for the time spent with Michihiro Omigawa and look forward to continuing this special relationship in the years to come. This week, filled with laughter, learning, and camaraderie, will always be one to remember.
